An Empirical Study of the Use of Relevance Information in Inductive Logic Programming

چکیده
Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) systems construct models for data using domain-specific background information. When using these systems, it is typically assumed that sufficient human expertise is at hand to rule out irrelevant background information. Such irrelevant information can, and typically does, hinder an ILP system’s search for good models. Here, we provide evidence that if expertise is available that can provide a partial-ordering on sets of background predicates in terms of relevance to the analysis task, then this can be used to good effect by an ILP system. In particular, using data from biochemical domains, we investigate an incremental strategy of including sets of predicates in decreasing order of relevance. Results obtained suggest that: (a) the incremental approach identifies, in substantially less time, a model that is comparable in predictive accuracy to that obtained with all background information in place; and (b) the incremental approach using the relevance ordering performs better than one that does not (that is, one that adds sets of predicates randomly). For a practitioner concerned with use of ILP, the implication of these findings are twofold: (1) when not all background information can be used at once (either due to limitations of the ILP system, or the nature of the domain) expert assessment of the relevance of background predicates can assist substantially in the construction of good models; and (2) good “first-cut” results can be obtained quickly by a simple exclusion of information known to be less relevant.

Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) systems construct explanations for data in terms of domain-speciic background information. How does the quality of this information aaect the performance of an ILP system? Results from experiments concerned with learning simple programs for list processing suggest that performance is sensitive to the type and amount of background knowledge provided. In particul...
متن کاملUse of a mixed integer programming model to achieve an optimum size of blast block in open-pit mining with regard to size of mineable block using fuzzy logic approach
In this paper, we present an integrated model to find the optimum size of blast block that uses (i) a multi-criteria decision-making method to specify the applicable size of the mineable block; (ii) a linear programming method for the selection of the blasted areas to be excavated and in deciding the quantity of ores and wastes to be mined from each one of the selected blocks. These two methods...
متن کاملA Study of Relevance for Learning in Deductive Databases
This paper is a study of the problem of relevance in inductive concept learning. It gives definitions of irrelevant literals and irrelevant examples and presents ecient algorithms that enable their elimination. The proposed approach is directly applicable in propositional learning and in relation learning tasks that can be solved using a LINUS transformation approach. A simple inductive logic ...
متن کاملInductive Learning in a Mixed Paradigm Setting
In a precedent-bused domain one appeals to previous cases to support a solution, decision, explanation, or an argument. Experts typically use care in choosing cases in precedent-based domains, and apply such criteria as case relevance, prototypicality, and importance. In domains where both cases and rules are used, experts use an additional case selection criterion: the generalizations that a p...
